Las Cumbres has developed an innovative program model designed to meet the social/emotional and concrete needs of two high-risk and underserved elementary schools in Northern New Mexico where children are disproportionately exposed to adverse childhood experiences, toxic stress, and significant environmental risk factors as compared to state and national averages.

The Nurturing Centers, located at Enos Garcia Elementary School in Taos and in Peñasco's Elementary School, are safe and supportive environments for students, families and school staff. Services identify students in need of additional supports and are designed to offer peer support, homework assistance, crisis intervention, mentoring, clothing and nutritious snacks. Parenting classes, as well as help accessing and navigating community resources, are available to caregivers who include Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, immigrant families and families with an incarcerated parent. The program is staffed by three family navigators and a Program Director and is supported by other Las Cumbres programs and committed community partners that provide complementary services such as child and family therapy, domestic violence shelter and intervention services, immigration advocacy, case management, and more.

The Nurturing Centers benefit from Las Cumbres’ wrap-around philosophy and program design which ensures that families have access to a wide safety-net and do not “fall through the cracks”. Nurturing Centers identify the specific needs of families in the community and tailor services to meet these needs. Additionally, when Nurturing Center staff identify significant gaps in services and resources within the community, they become strong advocates and change agents to address deficiencies.
