In the past three years, Las Cumbres has established unique school-based Nurturing Centers, housed in two elementary schools in Taos County, where teachers, administrators and students and their families are working together to address concerns that can disrupt many aspects of a child’s development and formation of sense of self. These concerns include physical/sexual/emotional abuse, substance use or abuse in the household, incarceration of a household member, or even parental separation or divorce. Las Cumbres Nurturing Center staff aim to improve students’ abilities to be present in the classroom by offering social and emotional support, therapeutic art activities, peer and mentor support, connection to additional resources, and opportunities for students to become “kindness ambassadors” in their school and the wider community. To further this work, we have recently been invited to join an 18-month nationwide collaboration through The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) to receive training and other supports, along with Enos Garcia Elementary staff, to develop Enos Garcia Elementary School in Taos as a “trauma-informed” school.
While a small stipend is available through the initiative, it will cover only one-third of the expense to send four individuals to the three NCTSN BSC Learning Sessions slated for between now and April of 2020. The first Learning Session is scheduled to take place on the West Coast in February. We are respectfully seeking financial assistance from individuals and businesses as an important next step to assure that school representatives will be able to take part in this incredible opportunity – an opportunity to increase knowledge and skills related to the effect of trauma on the physical and psychological development of students along with a chance to bolster understanding and initiate positive change along with other schools and districts across the country.
