Las Cumbres’ GRG Program proudly participated in Seniors Day at the New Mexico State Capitol on January 27, 2025, hosting an outreach table under the Rotunda of the State Roundhouse. The table featured informational materials about GRG programming, and newly designed GRG t-shirts were distributed for all participants to wear. Fourteen grandparents attended, including three who traveled from Peñasco. Freshly baked pastries prepared by staff and grandparents—especially the homemade empanadas—proved to be a popular draw and a warm point of connection with event attendees.
The 2025 Seniors Day coincided with the passage of House Bill 252, which amends the State’s Aging and Long-Term Services Department statute to establish a Kinship Caregiver Support pilot program. The Department will now develop eligibility criteria and implementation processes for kinship caregivers to apply and participate. The pilot is expected to launch in five to seven counties across the state, serving up to fifty participants in each community.
More about GRG
GRG also continues to collaborate closely with The SPOT (Más Comunidad) in Picuris-Peñasco to support food access, internet connectivity, and cross-referrals. In addition, the team is an active member of the Picuris-Peñasco Community Collaboration (PPCC), where they work alongside other local stakeholders to expand resources and co-develop community events that serve the broader Peñasco region. Our GRG team also sits on the LANL Grandparents and Kin Raising Children Advisory Board. While this group was initially formed to focus on grandparents and kin residing in Rio Arriba County, its membership reach has expanded to encompass the region of Rio Arriba, Los Alamos, and Taos.
