Every Star Represents an Opportunity: Every Opportunity Cultivates Inclusion

Each October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month recognizes the contributions of workers with disabilities and promotes the importance of inclusive employment opportunities in communities across the nation. Employment is about more than earning a paycheck. For individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), meaningful employment can support personal growth, strengthen independence, and create opportunities to contribute, connect, and thrive as valued members of the workforce.

Closer to home, Española Mayor Dennis Tim Salazar issued a proclamation recognizing October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month in the City of Española, reinforcing the community's commitment to inclusive employment opportunities. Las Cumbres Adult Services Community Integrated Employment individuals proudly gathered to be recognized for their accomplishments during a special award ceremony.

This year's Las Cumbres honorees, Vinz Marguez, David Lecht, Ricky Coriz, and Dakota Drake, were celebrated for their dedication, perseverance, and contributions to the workplace. Each received a certificate of recognition for their achievements. Emma Miramontes was also recognized as the champion of inclusive employment for helping turn opportunity into achievement, connection, and a sense of belonging through employment. Emma also serves as a bridge between Las Cumbres and the business community, helping cultivate partnerships that expand opportunities for meaningful employment and community belonging.

Adult Services Director Nanette Martinez de Rodriguez, on hand for the event, also acknowledged the vital role local employers play in building a more inclusive workforce and creating opportunities where individuals of all abilities can contribute their talents and skills. She recognized local businesses that embrace inclusive hiring and value the commitment, skills, and contributions these dedicated employees bring to the workplace. Special recognition was given to Pizza 9 for its longstanding partnership and commitment to employing these individuals. Additional employers with whom Adult Services' employment program are delighted to interface include UNM Health and Sciences, Food King, Walmart, Hacienda Home Center, Trinity on the Hill and Tiger Owl Ranch. Each of these and future businesses will receive a Star Partner - Cultivating Inclusion sticker to display in its windows, signifying its commitment to inclusive employment and community belonging.

"Through these relationships, we cultivate inclusion and help build a community where everyone has the opportunity to contribute, grow, and belong," said Martinez de Rodriguez. "We are building a more inclusive community, one opportunity at a time.”

The celebration served as a powerful reminder that when barriers are removed and opportunities are created, individuals of all abilities can thrive, enrich local workplaces, and strengthen the fabric of the community.
